"My birthday is coming is today!" said Charles. His birthday was today, and his best friend Joshua had planned a surprise for him.
"I know," answered Joshua with a smile on his face. When he got home he immediately asked his parents, "Is everything set for the party is tonight?"
"What party," asked his mother.
"The party for my friend, remember," said Joshua worriedly.
"I thought you said it was tomorrow. That was the date I even put on the invitations."
"Oh no!" Now he was beginning to panic. "I know what I will do, I will call everyone and tell them.
"And I will go out and get a cake," suggested his mother.
They began to go to work. His mom goes out to get the cake. Joshua starts calling all his friends about the party.
"What can I do to help," asked his dad.
"You can help with the decorations," said Joshua.
His sister also helped out by calling people as well. Their mother came back with a vanilla ice cream cake that said "Happy Birthday Josh" in icing on the cake.
Josh's friends started piling into the house, and he finished the calls. They all heard the doorbell ring.
"It's Charles, everyone hide," he whispered. "Come in, the door is unlocked." He came in.
"Hello, where is everybody?"
"Surprise," they all yelled.
"Is this all for me," Charles asked.
"It is a present from your best friend."
They all had some cake and had a great time at the party. Charles was so happy he had such a great and thoughtful best friend.

Response to Quote
Failure is never an option. A Japanese proverb states, "Fall seven times, stand up eight." If you do not succeed the first time, try and try again. When something does not work out for somebody they should not give up, instead they should try even harder the next time.
When I had my first typing test I typed two words per minute and ended up with a D. After that I was constantly practicing the typing test at home to get a better grade. On the next typing test I received a B as my grade. I kept practicing at home to the point where I got 42 words per minute and got an A+ on the typing test. Even though I did not do so well on the first test, by now I have improved my typing speed ten fold by not giving up.
Michael Jordan never gave up either on basketball. He failed to make his freshman basketball team in high school. Instead, of giving up on basketball Michael Jordan was drafted into the NBA because he improved the way he played. He went on to be known as the greatest basketball player in history, because he did not give up on his career. Giving up is never the right way to go about anything that is done by anybody.
No one should ever give up on anything. It does not matter what it is, but as long as that person keeps trying harder each time, they will be successful.

Extension of School Time
Dear Superintendent Richard O'Malley,
Extending school by one hour would not work. Bill Cosby said, "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." This shows that no one knows how to have everyone achieve academic success, but this decision would not please most people. The Edison Board of Education is deciding whether or not to extend the school day by one hour. Extra time would change our usual planned way of learning and doing work. School being an extra hour longer would not work out because there would not be enough money in the budget for it, would be an extra period added to the schedule for sixth graders through 12th graders, and would leave less time for students to do their homework due the next day.
An extra hour of school would mean that the schools would need more money to pay for it. Teachers would have to be paid more to work more time each day. The school budget was cut last year from nine million dollars to eight point six million dollars last time there was a voting for the referendum. Many people think that the voting for more money in the budget would be a yes because parents want their students to have a good education. It would be voted down because parents do not want to pay a huge amount of money in taxes. Last year, when the budget was cut Kindergarten went from a full day to half a day which is why there would not be an extra hour of school for students.
More school time would mean more time to learn, so that there would be another class period. The extra class period may be another subject doubled into two periods, or another subject for each grade to take. If, there was another subject added it would mean there would have to be extra classrooms added with teachers to teach that subject. The teacher would have to be specialized in the subject. There would need to be even more money in the budget to pay that teacher and to build a knew classroom. Others think that it would mean more learning and more knowledge. It would mean more homework and more to remember and the class might be one period for a subject doubled instead of a new subject.
School being extended would leave less time for students to do their homework. Only 20% of students make the All A Honor Roll every marking period. Some students that do not make it do not do most of their homework, or work up to midnight every day to finish their homework. With less time, and more work they will not get a chance to do most of their work. Others say that students need the homework, so that teachers can see whether they understand the work or not. Some students would have a bus to catch at 7:15 AM so that they would not get to it and the teachers would not have a chance to see if they understand it or not.
Longer school days would change the planned way for us to learn and take in information. Extending the day would not be good because there would not be enough money in the budget for it, there would need to be another period of the day, and there would be less time left for homework to be done. Changing the length of the school day would not change how students perform in school, whether they do well or not.
